Fresnel Lens
 Limited Editions

The Fresnel Lens - pronounced 'fra-nel' - was first introduced by the French scientist, Augustine Jean Fresnel.   Augustine was born in 1788.
In 1824, well  into Fresnel's career, he was employed by the Lighthouse Commission and as part of his effort he developed the use of compound lenses instead of mirrors for lighthouse visibility.
The new Fresnel Lens was introduced shortly after development and is used still today in almost all lighthouses throughout the nation.

Point Vicente, CA
3rd Order Bi-Valve
Fresnel Lens
Located along the picturesque coastal landscape of California, the Point Vicente Lighthouse stands as a reminder of the history of this serene location.
Point Vicente Light was illuminated in 1926 & was outfitted with a Third Order Fresnel Lens.
The lens was manufactured in 1886 by Barbier, Benord & Turenne in Paris, France, and is by far the most beautiful aspect of this magnificent lighthouse.
This lens is unlike any other because of the unique bivalve type design.
The double prism allowed for two rapid flashes, followed by seconds of darkness, giving the seafaring travelers better visibility and recognition of the treacherous area this lighthouse protects.
This Fresnel Lens is lighted, but batteries not included.

Boston Harbour, MA
Second Order
Fresnel Lens

Boston Harbor Light was the first lighthouse in America.  It was outfitted with a Second Order Fresnel Lens years later & that same lens continues to greet mariners entering the Harbor, just as it has for 144 years.
The Second Order Fresnel Lens was built in France & transported in sections for reassembly in the lantern room, its 12-sided design, containing more than 1500 hand-cut prisms, revolved on machinery that keepers had to rewind frequently.
The Second Order Fresnel Lens stands more than 6-ft high and close to 5-ft in circumference.   Its light is equivalent to more than 2-million candlepower.
Today the Coast Guard maintains the priceless Fresnel Lens, just as their predecessors did, but with one advantage:  they no longer have to extinguish it at dawn & relight it at dusk.
The light burns brightly 24 hours a day, flashing its familiar signal, once every 10 seconds, to mariners & welcoming them to Boston Harbor.
