Harmony Kingdom

Annual Black Box Series

The "Black Box" Series is an annual release of a box that has a theme that is generally tasteless, but is very popular with collectors.
The box figurine will come in a special black box.

SECRETS OF THE BOX:
Mother Nature's version of a tank, the formidable rhinoceros knows no predator other than humans.
Poachers have hunted the tough-skinned beasts nearly to extinction for the sake of their horns, which have supposed medicinal properties.
In this box figurine, rhinos exact their revenge by harvesting human noses.  The newspaper headline notes - "Manilow and Pinocchio Missing" - could they be prime targets for nose poachers?
One of the rhinos has shot Peter in the foot with a gun called "Old Rhinoblasty" - a take on "rhinoplasty", the ubiquitous nose job.
The vulture keeps an eye out for any spare noses for lunch.
A bag of freshly picked noses rests under Peter's foot.
Around the base are the names of rhino species with the numbers of each believed to exist.
In one interior compartment are four human skulls.   In the second, some of the animals from Ed's Safari bus seek refuge.

SECRETS OF THE BOX:
The 2002 Black Box echoes the vulture theme of the first Black Box, introduced in 1998.
Three vultures feast on a hapless zebra, the perennial wildlife documentary victim.
Watching vultures feed, it seems nothing would shock them!  Would it be a terrible faux pas to appear suddenly from where the sun don't shine?   Judging from the scowling faces, the book of "Vulture Etiquette" evidently says yes.
A pretzel by the wayside remains untouched.  Having heard of President Bush's mishap,  the birds have decided to leave this dangerous morsel alone.

The interior shows a hamburger, feather knife, and fork.
"20022002" highlights the palindromic nature of this year.
Around the inside of the lid are myriad references to fast food.
The mouse is located behind a vulture's leg.

SECRETS OF THE BOX:
"Happy Meal" is the eighth box figurine in the Black Box Series.
The piece came about after Peter read an article on piranhas.   One story, probably apocryphal, told of a cow being stripped to the bone in ten minutes.
Peter's box portrays a cow that doesn't believe this is possible, so she sets about timing the piranhas.  Notice the watch on the hoof.
The "unhappy meal" carton on the base describes her mood when she realizes the flaw in the experiment.
This Black Box also takes a swipe at the fast food industry.
Eating straight from the cow would be the ultimate fast food.
No. 4 refers to Peter's son who was celebrating his 4th birthday during the carving of this piece.   The prisoner in the ribcage is Peter's daughter, Millie.   The ribcage reminded him of the bars on Millie's cot where she waits to be freed each morning.
Open the lid to see a school of piranha reading through a kid's menu.
